How to protect your safe against moisture and mold
Remember that a safe is a closed, dark, isolated space. There is no sunlight or air circulation inside, which means that your belongings could be damaged or destroyed by moisture. A safe can protect your possessions from everything except moisture. Don’t let the items you guard like a treasure get ruined! Especially when it’s so easy to avoid, as we’ll explain below.
Cash. Stamps. Deeds. Documents. Jeweler. These are all valuable possessions that can be harmed by moisture. And there is something even worse than damp banknotes, wet paper, and smudged ink: mold and oxidation. The effects of excessive moisture can cause permanent damage to your belongings. It doesn’t make sense to safeguard something so carefully, just to find out that when the time comes to use it, the damage has already been done.
How does moisture affect objects kept in a safe? Excessive moisture in the air inside the safe (remember, this is an enclosed space with no ventilation and no escape for the air inside) will condense to form water when the temperature of the metal gets cold. There is no air flow inside, and no sunlight either. In other words, it is a fully enclosed space that remains in complete darkness. This condensation will cause mold to appear and will produce oxidation on any metal, including the safe itself and any metal objects inside of it. Once condensation has begun to occur, any paper items in the safe will have become damp, and your documents (or your stamps, cash, etc.) may already be permanently damaged.
It is very easy to prevent these problems, but watch out for ineffective solutions that cannot fully address the problem. Sodium bicarbonate is great for baking, or for making chalk to write on chalkboards, and rice is essential when making paella. However, these homemade solutions for absorbing moisture are not effective. These home remedies cannot be trusted when it comes to protecting objects kept in a safe. The only effective solutions are those specifically designed to absorb and securely retain moisture. Just as you would only entrust your health to a doctor, you should only entrust the security of the possessions you keep in a safe to a moisture control product designed specifically to solve problems caused by excessive humidity.
